Chapter 5 - James - Knight Moves

Chapter 5 - James - Knight Moves

James woke up in a cold sweat. “What the heck was that?” he muttered to himself. His heart was still racing but he did feel infinitely better than he had last night. He was on a secret mission he hated even thinking about much less talking about. And he really needed someone to talk to about this. His immediate supervisor Detective Cornelius had discovered one of the undercover agents had gone rogue last night leaving him without a backup on this assignment.

It just didn’t make sense. Hailey was such a good partner and the fact that she had turned evidence over to the bad guys left him reeling. Who else could you trust if you couldn’t trust your partner? Danny Cornelius was interrogating her right now and he hadn’t wanted to be involved in any of it. He couldn’t. It was hurting his heart.

They were bringing a new guy in from higher up the police food chain and he hoped it was someone he could trust. Working undercover was not his favorite assignment. He hated lying to everyone he knew, especially people like Faith for whom trust had been hard for her to bring into her life as of late.

The guys would kid him calling him Captain America’s better looking brother, Mike. And so the name Mike Rogers kind of stuck for all the undercover ops as his call sign. The new guy’s call sign was Moon. He wasn't sure what that was all about.

James got out of bed and ran a scalding shower to clear away all the grime from yesterday, both the kind he could see and the kind he couldn’t see. He mindlessly ran through all the chores on the farm and then rode into town to help Noah with their current financial hiccup. When he got there Deacon’s Jeep wasn’t in the parking lot. That was odd. In its place was a slick black Mercedes. Nice.

Sitting behind the pastor’s desk was a well groomed man with black hair and a clean shaven face. He had never seen him before.

“Can I help you?” James asked him.

“You must be James,” the man said. “Jax Temple. I’m replacing Hailey. Strangely enough I have been helping Noah with this financial mess on my own time so I thought I’d stop by.”

“Where is Noah?”

“Some curious business about him having to take a woman named Roanna to reunite with Jason. It didn’t sound like he was coming back any time soon.” Jax stood and extended his hand. “So glad to finally meet you. I have heard a lot about you.”

“How’s that?”

“I have been secretly guarding Faith for months. You do seem to come up in conversation around her a lot. I scored this assignment since I know Faith from way back. Twenty-five years ago we dated for like five years.”

“That was you?”

“The same.”

James sighed. He couldn’t decide if this assignment just got smoother or more difficult.
