Episode 9: Trouble Anew

“This is not a good idea,” John Ellison told his sister, Teryl. “Why can’t we just leave them alone? I mean, I’m all for cutting our losses. Killing innocent children was not on the contract I signed.”

“I’m not going to kill them, you idiot. Nigel is of more value to me alive. I could care less about the girl.” Teryl stepped out of the car with Glock in hand.

“You’re not going to just leave her here.” John stuck his head out the driver’s side window.

“Watch me.”

Teryl observed the horror-stricken face of Nigel Bennett and smiled. He had a good reverence for her if he feared her. She could respect a man who knew who his enemies were.

“It’s no use Bennett,” Teryl said. “You’re coming with us.” She pointed her gun at him with only a moderate interest. She had no plan to kill him. He was too cute to kill.

“Run, Raven!” Nigel yelled.

“What about the dogs!” Raven said with fear. She knew who her enemies were too.

“Forget about the bloody dogs. What’s worse? Being shot or bitten by a couple of dogs?”

“Good point.” Raven slipped through the holographic doorway at the front of the unassuming house unseen by Teryl. Her entrance was blocked by a large pillar of bricks.

Nigel stopped and raised his hands when Teryl placed the gun barrel at his jaw.

“I’m really not in the mood for non-compliance.”

“Right,” Nigel said. “I knew that. That’s why I’m coming with you.”

Teryl nudged him toward the SUV getting a good view of his back side. She smiled in approval. She might have to frisk him before this night was over. Maybe it would make him more available to answer her questions. If not, there was always the truth serum. She’d have a little fun with him before administering the latter. Teryl knew her sex appeal could crack any man. It was one thing that had never failed her.

Raven watched from behind the fence as they captured Nigel.

“No,” she whispered.

She jumped as a hand touched her shoulder. The man stood back a step. He was wearing a decidedly British blazer and slacks.

“Sorry, about that. Nigel said to be expecting someone. I had no idea it would be a pretty young thing like yourself. Please, come this way.”

Raven hesitated. “I’m not going anywhere without Nigel.”

The man peeked over Raven’s shoulder as Teryl shoved Nigel into the back seat of her SUV.

“Get down,” she said pulling him behind the pillar. “They might see you.”

“Don’t worry, love. That hologram is like a two way mirror. We can see them but they can’t see us. Anyway, I believe Nigel is a bit preoccupied at the moment on his current case. Why don’t you come inside and we’ll see about getting you a hot meal and a ticket back to America.”

The man smiled and gestured toward the elaborate house which seemed much bigger now that she was inside the yard than it had minutes earlier.

“By the way, my name is Mitchell. Mitchell Keller. I’m Nigel’s boss, so to speak.”

Raven didn’t know if she should trust Mitchell Keller but at the moment Keller seemed a better option than Teryl and her psycho brother. She stepped inside the mansion and disappeared behind the giant doors.

The men in black G.I. Joe outfits slammed Rafe Martinez into the side of one of their dark black SUVs. There was a string of them lined up one after another outside the tiny cabin and about ten guys hoisting guns large enough to shoot through the side of a building.

“I’m impressed boys. Quite a little arsenal to capture little ole me.”

One of the men behind him pistol whipped Rafe in the back of the head. It took only a minute for him to shake off pain. He’d learned over the years how to channel his thoughts away from the pain. Blood dripped down a gash at his temple. He wiped the trickle of red that pooled at his lip.

“Watch it, bucko. It took me a long time to look this pretty.”

Another G.I. Joe slammed the back of Rafe’s knees with a police baton. He pitched forward landing hard against SUV leaving a slight dent.

“Ah, sorry about that. My bad.” He stood and surveyed the scene. Theresa walked out of the cabin looking as if she was colder than the water rushing in the Mississippi River. “I guess the good ole boys aren’t quite as good as they used to be,” Rafe said snidely. “You’re going to have to do more than that to get me to talk. And even if I did talk. I don’t know what I’d say since -- Oh, yeah, I don’t know anything!”

Another trooper started to attack when Theresa stopped him.

“He’s right. He doesn’t know anything. We have more important things to do tonight.”

Darien Wolfe who had remained suspiciously silent for the last few minutes nodded his head. “Let him go. Unit One, take Mr. Martinez and drop him in the middle of no where then meet us back at the convergence point.

Two G.I.’s shoved Rafe into a SUV with a black bag over his head and sped away.

“That man tried to save my life,” Theresa said.

“It looks to me like he was trying to do more than that,” Darien shook his head. “I know your compulsions in your sexual activity. I’ve been privy to them more than once so I can put this aside, just this once. The next time you decide you must have sex with someone, make sure they have the proper security clearance.”

Theresa saluted Darien. “Yes, sir.”

“Don’t give me those I’ll-make-it-up-to-you eyes, Shea.” Darien chucked. “Sometimes you’re more trouble than you’re worth. But your kind of trouble I’ll take any day. Get in the car and let’s go.”

“Who’s there?” Victor Cross asked the empty room.

Lita Martinez watched Victor and smiled. This game was better than she thought it would be. She’d never seen Victor spooked before. It gave her a feeling of power. She was about to reveal herself, dressed in her favorite sexy outfit, but stopped to touch up her lipstick when she heard the doorbell ring.

“Damn,” she whispered. Lita didn’t want anyone interrupting her playtime with Victor.

Victor studied the room with a frown and crossed to the door. Behind it was Melanie Peel.

“What do you want,” he said with displeasure, turning away from her and pouring himself a bourbon.

“I thought you’d be happier to see me considering I’ve inserted myself in one of the top secret branches of the Knights Foundation.”

“Can I get you a drink, Mel?” Victor gestured toward the hefty bar at his disposal.

“Nah, I need to keep myself awake and ready. I’ve got a lot to do if I’m going to help Angel hack his way into the Immortal Code.”

“Do you have anything I can pass on to my operatives?”

“No, but I will -- soon.”

“Then why, pray tell, did you visit me in the middle of the night at my home if you had nothing.” Victor frown was menacing.

“Oh, I don’t know.” Melanie walked nonchalantly toward the area Lita was hiding. Lita backed farther into the hallway out of view. Suddenly she turned around and faced Victor.

“You gave me a mission and it’s been quite an unsatisfying one.” Melanie unzipped the dress she was wearing and shoved it off her shoulders letting it drop to the floor. She threw her hair over her shoulder. As Victor stared at her body, she looked directly at Lita. “Sorry” she silently mouthed. “He’s mine.”

“Are you interested in some mutual fulfillment,” she whispered in his ear pressing feather kisses up his jaw. “Paul Thomas has left me cold and I need to feel alive. Are you up for the challenge?” She chuckled.

“My that’s quite an offer. Let’s defer to the conference room for some negotiation.”

Lita cursed as she watched Victor lead Melanie into his bedroom. Damn that interfering wench! She’d find a way to get even with her if it was the last thing she’d do.

“You have to leave the kid alone, Teryl.” John Ellison told his sister once they reached their alternate location.

They’d selected many hideouts around Athens this one was quite elaborate and belonged to one of Victor Cross’ European colleagues. The estate was massive but still close enough to the city to be a perfect hideaway.

“Don’t you have an article you need to be writing? Why don’t you leave me and Mr. Bennett here alone for awhile.”

John sighed. He couldn’t reason with her when she was like this.

“All I ask is you don’t kill him.”

Teryl smiled as she slammed the door on John. “If he dies, it won’t be from a bullet.

Nigel backed away, his hands tied behind his back. There was no place to go and no where to hide from her.

“Isn’t this a little extreme?,” Nigel squeaked. “I thought you had a thing for Mackenzie.”

“Oh, I do. But you’ve got quite a physique on you and I wouldn’t want to miss out experiencing such prime meat.”

Teryl ripped at Nigel’s shirt showing his six-pack abs. “Mmmm. I had a feeling you were hiding something premium under those stuffy clothes.” his shoes and pants went to the floor next.

She kissed his neck and he jerked away but she could tell he was into it. He was almost a laughable sight with his socked feet scurrying across the room in only his jockey shorts and ripped dress shirt.

She wrapped the tie around his mouth and discarded all of her own clothes but her peach bra and panties.

Then she reached for her PDA and opened a dialogue window. She took a video of Nigel cowering in the corner with practically no clothes on then sat the device on the dresser and pointed it at the bedroom.

Teryl smiled and waved for the camera, then grabbed Nigel’s bound hands and drug him backward into the bedroom. He couldn’t scream for help but grunted as she threw him across the bed and crawled atop him.

“Come on, Nige. Let’s give Mac a show.

Alicia Scott could hardly believe she followed Darien when he left her at the Legacy Infirmary. She wasn’t one of those strong women she read about in novels. She was damn scared and she knew that someone else could be in danger. She wasn’t sure who that someone might be until she spied Darien and a band of troopers drag a man against his will into an awaiting SUV.

“Alicia,” she said to herself. “This is the most insane thing you’ve ever done.” The breath came quicker in her breast as she trailed a good distance behind the SUV that had veered away from the rest. The was the car with the prisoner inside.

They drove almost half an hour when the SUV slowed and a long black sack was shoved out the side door. The sack hit the road with what looked like a sickening thud.

“Oh, God. Oh, God.” Alicia hid her car behind a grove of trees. The SUV spun their wheels and spit rocks at the man who was already trying to escape the bag.

Within a minute the SUV was gone and another rush of traffic came toward the long black sack. She gunned her engine and sped over vegetation, large rocks and fallen tree branches then skidded around in front of the man who was now half out of the bag.

She thrust open the passenger side door. “Get in!”

Rafe stared at her with awe. “Alicia?”

Mackenzie Gray heard his PDA ringing and jumped out of the shower. He was waiting in his hotel room for more intel from either Paul or Harry. Neither was being very forthcoming at the moment. Nikki was off getting a drink in the hotel bar and stewing after he handcuffed her to the bed earlier in the day. He had no choice. He didn’t want anyone he cared about in danger, especially someone who was on the list of operatives compromised by the hole in the Immortal encryption code.

“This better be good,” Mac said before seeing who was calling.

He heard the moans and sexual sounds coming from the PDA. At first he thought it was a crank call but then he heard Nigel’s voice yelling like a girl to leave him alone.

His PDA had logged the call as from an unknown origin but he knew who was on the other end of that call. He would recognize that body anywhere.

Nikki Carpenter walked into the room and swayed a bit. Mac barely glanced at her.

“Did we get any more mission parameters?” Nikki asked. She spied over his shoulder and saw the crawling over the man on the bed.”

She slapped him on the back. “Are we into porn now, Gray?”

“Sober up, Carpenter. It’s Teryl and she has Nigel. Look for yourself.” He thrust the PDA into her hands as he grabbed his gun and stuck it into his holster.

“We’ve got to find him.”

“Hey --” Nikki said slurring her speech. “I know where that place is. I worked undercover there on an assignment back in my rookie years.”

Mac held Nikki by the shoulders and shook her. “Tell me how to get there, Nikki.”

She smiled wickedly. “No.”

“No?”

“You’re not leaving me behind this time.”

Mac didn’t have time to argue. “All right. But I’m driving.” He grabbed the keys to his rent-a-car and marched toward the door. Then he turned and looked at Nikki. “Coming?”

“You bet.”

Rafe could hardly believe that Alicia had come to his rescue. He didn’t even realize she knew he existed.

“Are you all right?” Alicia asked. She stared at the gash in his temple and the tender way he was fingering his ribs.

“A little bumped and bruised, but I’ll be okay.” Rafe glanced over at her, she was one of the most beautiful things he’d seen in a long time. Not including the tramp he’d fished out of the river for no reason at all. “How did you know they had me.”

Alicia kept her eyes on the road, her shaking hands held the wheel with a steel grip.

“I didn’t know it was you,” she said, honestly.

“Then why?”

“It was Darien. He got a call while we were together.” She shrugged her shoulders and looked at him. “I decided to follow him and saw them attack you.”

Rafe started to give her his thanks when a car came out of nowhere and slammed into the side of them. Rafe slammed his head against the dash and Alicia’s chin grazed the steering wheel. Glass shattered and metal bent as the truck shoved them to a precipice.

Neither screamed as they teetered on the edge of a drop off. They were both out cold.
